I have to ask the question on the lips of Carolina Panthers fans everywhere. How can you lose to the New Orleans Saints by 21 points while scoring just 13 points and come back seven days later to beat the Super Bowl Champions New England Patriots? On the road no less.
In a battle between a pair of 2-1 teams, someone was going to leave the field with a 2-2 mark. Few thought it would be Tom Brady and the Patriots.
Graham Gano knocked down a 48-yard field goal as time expired and Cam Newton returned to 2015 form while accounting for four touchdowns, helping lead the Panthers to a 33-30 win over New England.
Newton, who threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns, brought back memories while leading a 10-play, 46-yard drive to set up the game-winning field goal. He also became the first quarterback in league history to have 50 rushing touchdowns after a seven-yard scramble that made it 29-16 in the fourth quarter.
Kelvin Benjamin, who played despite being on the injury report with an injured knee, led the Panthers’ effort with a 104-yard outing. The Panthers travel to Detroit to play the Lions Sunday.
Finally, playoff baseball is here. The time of year many, myself included, tune back into baseball.
The playoffs started this week and this is how I see things shaking out. Last year, it was all about the Chicago Cubs and they did not disappoint as the jinx is over. The Cubbies are back in the playoffs but I do not see a repeat.
What I do see happening is the Cleveland Indians returning to the World Series and winning it all this time. The Indians will take care of the New York Yankees in the Division Series and will then have a close series over Houston who eliminated Boston in the Division Series.
I am going to go with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League. They will have to beat the Cubs to do so and that will be a fun series to watch. My sleeper is Arizona if the Diamondbacks can get through the wildcard game against Colorado that took place on Wednesday. I think the Cubs will eliminate Washington because that is what the Nationals do – lost in first round of playoffs. The Dodgers will struggle if they have to meet Arizona but should prevail behind their starting pitching that includes Clayton Kershaw.
That leaves us with a Cleveland – Los Angeles World Series. Right now, I like the Indians. But that could change as October baseball usually gives us surprises and drama.
