North Carolina – The deadline to register to vote in North Carolina is 25 days before an election. The voter registration deadline for the 2020 general election is Oct. 9, 2020.

The county board of elections must receive your application by this date. If an application is received after the deadline, it will be timely if it is postmarked on or before the voter registration deadline. Otherwise, the application will not be processed until after the election.

If you register through the Division of Motor Vehicles or another voter registration agency, your application will be timely if it is received by that agency at least 25 days before the election.

Eligible voters may also register to vote and vote on the same day during the one-stop early voting period. To learn more, please visit our Vote Early in Person page at https://www.ncsbe.gov/voting/vote-early-person

If an election requires a second primary, voter registration is not allowed between the first and second primary.

If you are a military or overseas voter, the voter registration deadline is 5 p.m. on the day before the election. For more information on military-overseas voting, visit this page. One-Stop Early Voting

Any registered voter or eligible individual may cast an absentee ballot in person during the early voting period. In North Carolina, this period is sometimes called “one-stop early voting.”

One-stop early voting site information is available now for the 2020 general election:

Use the One-Stop Early Voting Site Search here: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/ossite/

In 2020, the in-person early voting period begins Thursday, October 15, and ends Saturday, October 31. During early voting, voters may cast a ballot at any early voting site in their county. This is different from Election Day when registered voters must vote at their assigned precinct.

When you check in to vote at an early voting site, you may update your name or address within the same county, if necessary. Find early voting sites and schedules in your county with the One-Stop Early Voting Site Search.

Note: Voting sites and schedules change for each election and is only available through the search tool once finalized.

To see the voting equipment your county uses for one-stop early voting, go to the Voting Equipment page, and see the map for “One-Stop Early Voting Equipment, by County.”

The early voting time period for most of the surrounding counties is October 15-31. For more on voting sites, please visit: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/ossite/ or https://www.ncsbe.gov
