Adam Sandler, mostly known for slumming it in such low rent comedies as Grown Ups and The Waterboy, proves once again he’s only as good as the director with whom he’s working. In the case of his latest, Uncut Gems, he’s paired with the formidable filmmaking duo known as the Safdie Brothers (Good Time) and the results are extraordinary. Sandler stars as Howard Ratner, a jeweler who’s in over his head writing checks that his butt can’t cash. Leave it to the Safdie siblings to build such a compelling film around such a despicable character. It’s riveting filmmaking at its finest.
