Nightmare Alley (2021) (**½) Guillermo Del Toro’s latest, a remake of the 1947 film noir, features Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett as a couple of schemers looking to fleece a wealthy widower. The film has style to spare but is fatally overlong, with a first hour that could have easily been reduced to a half hour or less that deadens the film. For those willing to go along for the ride, however, the final act contains a somewhat redeeming, albeit excessively violent, wrap up to the proceedings that makes what came before somewhat more palatable. There’s also some great supporting work from the great character actor, Richard Jenkins. A mixed bag to be sure but not without the occasional rousing moment.
