Statesville, NC – The 2016 Downtown Statesville Spring Art Crawl is set for Friday, April 22 from 5:30–8:30 pm. The Art Crawl will showcase more than 75 artists in over 35 different galleries, shops and businesses scattered throughout the heart of Downtown Statesville. It is self-guided and you can begin the Crawl at any location. Just look for the sidewalk markers indicating a participating business. A program/map directing attendees to all the locations and listing all participating artists will be available at each location.

The Art Crawl concept is simple – come downtown and walk from location to location, enjoy music, meet the artists and enjoy their work (maybe make a purchase), browse through the shops hosting the artists, and stay late for live music, food, and drinks at one of our many restaurants and bars.

There will be a number of special highlights at this Art Crawl including Out of the Blue: Artists of the Blue Ridge, a group of five female artists from in and around the Blue Ridge Area. The artists who make up Out of the Blue intersect between the worlds of imagination and inspiration—from whimsical to literal. The group includes the artist featured on the Art Crawl poster, Marion Cloaninger, as well as Susan Marlowe, Beth Andrews, Norma Suddreth, and Marsha Holmes. With extensive training and experience, these women are accomplished, award-winning artists, and we are honored their work will be featured at GG’s Art Frames Gifts. As a special treat, Marion Cloaninger will be demonstrating her technique during Art Crawl.

While you’re out and about, make sure to stop by the new Statesville Sculpture Garden, located at the corner of Center Street and Water Street, adjacent to the old Gordon Furniture Building, currently the Statesville Historical Collection. The garden will boast its first sculpture, entitled “Around the Whirld,” a nine-foot, stainless steel piece by a North Carolina sculptor named Mike Roig. The garden will be beautifully landscaped with brick and concrete pathways, iron fencing, and a distinctive shade structure.

Rescue Ranch will be another highlight of the event, with art created by the animals at their ranch. According to their website, Rescue Ranch is a non-profit animal welfare organization, “working toward their primary goal of ending pet overpopulation and associated suffering by promoting and providing for the humane care, protection and control of domestic animals.” As part of the care, they provide enrichment activities to help stimulate the animals, eliciting some of their natural behaviors. One such activity is painting. Caretakers will use water-based, non-toxic paint on the paws, tail, or body of animals, and allow them to move on the canvas as they please. The Ranch then uses the art to raise money for their cause, whether at auctions or events like Art Crawl.

The Art Crawl is a free event and offers a great time to be downtown, visit and shop local businesses, meet artists and enjoy their work. We especially would like to acknowledge our Art Crawl sponsors – Sheri Bistreich and Associates, a financial advisory practice, Ameriprise Financial and Statesville Jewelry & Loan for their support of this event. Parking during the Art Crawl is available on-street and in 10 public lots throughout the business district. For more information contact Downtown Statesville at 704-878-3436 or email:
