Winston-Salem, NC – Award-winning author Beth Macy will speak about her new book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 7 pm. This event is sponsored by Bookmarks and Kilpatrick Townsend and will be held at Footnote Coffee & Cocktails (634 W. Fourth Street #120 in Winston-Salem). It is free and open to the public.

“We are so excited that we were able to re-schedule Beth Macy after she was unable to attend our September 2018 Festival of Books and Authors,” said Ginger Hendricks, Executive Director. “We know this will be a riveting discussion of her book and the social issues it explores.”

Dopesick is an indie bestseller that exposes the opioid epidemic as an issue of national concern in the United States. Macy will discuss the medical culture and the indiscriminate nature of a national crisis. She says “I wrote this book the only way I knew how—by witnessing the epidemic’s landing in three Virginia communities over two decades and getting to know the people on the front lines. From distressed small communities in central Appalachia to wealthy suburbs, from disparate cities to once idyllic farm towns, it’s a heartbreaking trajectory that explains how the national crisis became so entrenched.”

Beth Macy is a New York Times bestselling author and journalist who takes on important social justice issues with impressive depth. She was awarded the Nieman Fellowship for Journalism by Harvard University in 2010. In addition to Dopesick, Macy is also the author of Factory Man: How One Furniture Maker Battled Offshoring, Stayed Local, and Helped Save an American Town and Truevine: Two Brothers, a Kidnapping, and a Mother’s Quest: A True Story of the Jim Crow South.
