Hickory – You are invited to learn more about our world through the best way to learn – listening to others, our friends and neighbors.
On Tuesday, August 15, at 7-8:30pm, Hickory International Council and Hickory Community Relations Council are pleased to host “Sail the Seven Seas Through Study Abroad and Stories Seminar: Meet-and-Greet the World”, a seminar and social at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library in Hickory. The event is free and all are welcome.
The purpose of the evening is two-fold: academic – to learn about our rapidly globalizing world via the lens of study abroad; social – to build relationships in the community via one-on-one conversation.
Aaron Kohrs, Board Member of HIC & CRC, will deliver the opening address, arguing the singular formative experience of (many) youth today is study abroad, and Dr. Laura Dobson, of Lenoir-Rhyne University, is the honorable key note speaker. She is Director of International Education and Political Science Professor at LRU.
“Tour guides” will represent many countries and continents as the public “travels” the room, mingling with others. These volunteers are friendly, globally-experienced community members. Organizer Aaron Kohrs has chosen a “star-studded” group of individuals who have lived, worked, traveled to or immigrated from many countries.
Says Kohrs, “When we’re learning about our world through listening to others, we’re really learning to love it and everyone who lives here with us. “
