Newton, NC – The 2016-2017 Season celebrates The Green Room Community Theatre’s 30th year with big-name musicals, touching dramas, Southern comedies, and more. All productions will be in the Old Post Office Playhouse on the main stage in the McCreary Theatre or in the smaller, more intimate Black Box Theatre. The Old Post Office Playhouse is located in historic downtown Newton at 10 South Main Avenue.
This season features six mainstage productions and opens with the well-loved musical, West Side Story. This innovative and heart-wrenching drama is often called a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story with two young lovers caught between two street gangs battling for territory and respect. This beautiful musical runs September 9 – 25, 2016. Next, Southern Fried Nuptials, playing October 7 – 16, 2016, will leave you laughing at the antics of the Frye family as they deal with a crazy assemblage of family while planning a wedding.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, is the third show of our 30th Anniversary Season. This “tale as old as time” is Disney’s classic retelling filled with all the characters and songs of the Academy-Award-winning animated feature. Experience this enchanted world from November 18- December 11, 2016 as it comes to life on stage in a production perfect for the whole family.
Our annual all-youth production is Treasure Island, a thrilling adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, playing February 17 – 26, 2017. Join Jim Hawkins as he discovers a treasure map in a dead pirate’s sea-chest in this legendary tale of piracy and heroism.
Leading Ladies, March 31- April 9, 2017, is a hilarious comedy based on two English Shakespearean actors who try to pass themselves off as heirs to a fortune. Will they be able to pull it off, or will they blow their cover?
The mainstage season ends with All Shook Up, inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley, playing May 5 – 21, 2017. This upbeat musical will have you jumpin’ out of your blue suede shoes with such Elvis classics as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”
We are proud to present two very different shows in our Black Box Theatre this season. First – a thriller. An apartment of a blind woman becomes the site of a terrifying game of cat and mouse in Wait Until Dark, January 20 – February 5, 2017. Who will have the upper hand in the dark? The season ends with the dramatic comedy Boeing Boeing playing June 2 – 18, 2017. This is the story of a French bachelor and his three lovely female flight attendants. He has always been able to juggle these women due to their flight schedules, but what happens when they all end up at his apartment on the same day? Will he be able to keep up this charade, or will a disaster occur?
For the young at heart, we will also present The Quirky Quest to Find the Unicorn’s Ukulele, written by The Green Room’s Creative Director, John David Brown, III. This runs March 10 –19, 2017. Join the adventure when the brave knight Sir Circumference sets out on a quest to find an elusive treasure that will save the life of the beautiful Princess Penelope. Come and discover the hidden treasures that lay within each of us.
This season also includes our 11th annual Shakespeare in the Park production. This year, we will present Twelfth Night! Come enjoy Shakespeare’s classic comedy about mistaken identities and the mayhem that ensues. Join us at Southside Park in Newton at one of four free performances – August 7 – 15, 2016.
The Green Room offers two season ticket options to suit your needs: a 6-admission ticket (available for $75 for Adults and $65 for Seniors (60+) and Students) as well as an 8-admission ticket ($100 for Adults, $90 for Seniors and Students). These are FLEX tickets which means you may use one admission per show or more than one admission per show. It is completely up to you!
