Vale, NC – The Hart Square Craft School will host a Gourd Art Class Saturday, July 2, 2022, 10am-5:15pm. Fleming will guide this class in the Sigmon Family Education Center. The Hart Square Craft School launched earlier this year to empower local traditional artisans.

Judi Fleming has been doing gourd art for nearly 30 years using this versatile vegetable. She has taught gourd art and crafts all along the east coast and won numerous best of show awards in juried art shows. She is currently the President of the North Carolina Gourd Society and 1st Vice President of the American Gourd Society as well as a member of the Southeastern Civilian Living Historians.

“Gourds remind us of the ingenuity of early Americans,” said Hart Square Education and Membership Manager Mya Banner. “They made what they needed from what they had,” she concluded. Dr. Eugene Tesdahl, Director of Collections and Interpretation at Hart Square Village added, “Artisans like Judi Fleming breathe life into invaluable knowledge that we preserve and share at Hart Square.”

Space is still available to register for the Gourd Art class at Hart Square Craft School. Each student will take home their own gourd canteen. Register on the Hart Square Village website. https://www.hartsquare.com/craft-classes/gourd-crafting-class-july-2
