Hickory, NC – Consider recurring themes of memory and time, and how what we see changes us during the exhibition Palimpsest: New Work by Fanjoy Labrenz with Sculpture by Tom Shields, now through Nov. 13 at Hickory Museum of Art (HMA), 243 Third Ave., N.E., Hickory. The installation by Sally Fanjoy and James Labrenz features photographic prints and projections, and furniture sculptures by Penland, NC artist Tom Shields.
The exhibition’s title – Palimpsest – refers to something reused or altered, but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form, according to Fanjoy Labrenz.
“Throughout this exhibit, we consider the recurring themes of memory and time – how we process what we see and how what we see changes us,” Fanjoy Labrenz describes in their artist statement. “As artists, we are challenged to both resist and embrace this progression.”
The furniture sculptures were created by Shields during his recent artist residency at Century Furniture. Fanjoy Labrenz met Shields while documenting his artist residency and the idea of a joint installation followed later.
As Century Furniture’s inaugural artist in residence, Shields was also the first artist to ever work in residence in a furniture manufacturing facility in the United States. Shields uses his knowledge of wood and his artistic training to create original works of art from materials left over from the furniture manufacturing process. He also utilizes recycled chairs and tables, all found objects that were mass produced.
Meet the artists during an opening reception 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 in the Shuford Gallery at HMA and explore themes of transformation. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Call HMA at 828-327-8576 to reserve space.
