Hickory – Catawba Valley Community College’s Information Technology Department in partnership with K-64 Learning will offer a two free week-long camps for middle schoolers.

Coding Fun Camp is for rising 6th-8th graders. Runs July 8 – 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the main college campus in Hickory.

Middle schoolers will learn about programming ozobots, designing web pages, and programming drones in a fun atmosphere. Participants will leave the camp with their own Ozobot Bit along with a basic understanding of computer programming and web design. Hands-on practice with writing simple programs and developing websites is the main focus of the camp. Participants have the opportunity to experience firsthand how the programs work through the Ozobots and drones.

In addition, they will gain an understanding of social media safety and what should be done if they experience cyberbullying.

There is no charge for the camp sponsored by Anitab.org which seeks to connect, inspire, and guide women in computing, and organizations that view technology innovation as a strategic imperative. Lunch is included.

Ethical Computer Hacking Camp is for rising 6th-8th graders. Runs July 15 -19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the main college campus in Hickory.

This free camp provides middle school students with hands-on experience completing labs that are designed for the industry certification of Certified Ethical Hacker. Participants will learn how information networks function and get an opportunity to implement and break security in hands-on labs.

Students will be required to sign a waiver prior to the start of the camp stating skills learned will not be used for illegal purposes. They will also leave the camp with a thumb drive, an understanding of social media safety, and what to do if they experience cyberbullying.
