Hudson, NC – Foothills Performing Arts presents “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” on July 15th. This production concludes the 2015-2016, 40th Anniversary Season where the patrons chose their favorites from the past to reprise. “Cuckoo’s Nest” was first performed at FPA in 2000.
When Randle Patrick McMurphy (played by Yulson Suddreth) gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But the martinet Nurse Ratched (Carla Robinson) runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. The battle of wills between the rebellious McMurphy and the inflexible Ratched soon affects all the ward’s patients. Scott Nephew fulfills his dream of acting the role of Chief Bromden, who narrates the story in the novel by Ken Kesey. Other colorful inmates include Andrew Casturao, Dylan Webb, Chris Sepulveda, Jeff Beane, and Justin Thomas. The institution staff are played by Thomas Townsend, M. Aaron Sowers, Jane Lucas, Heather Hendrix and Kade Jenkins. Tori Squailia and Brittany Hendrix round out the cast list.
Written by Dale Wasserman, this production is rated R due to language and adult situations. It is published by Samuel French, Inc. Amber Ellis Biecker returns to FPA as Artistic Director with Brittany King as the Stage Manager. Scott Woodard serves as Production Assistant. Amber is excited with the production, and that, while several FPA veterans are involved, others are appearing in their first play ever.
