Valdese, NC – Carolina Broadway Theatre Company starts off its 2019-2020 season with the Tony Award-winning musical “City of Angels” at the Old Rock School Theatre in Valdese on November 15th and 16th at 7:00 pm and on November 17th at 3:00 pm. All performances feature the Fred T. Foard High School Jazz Band for live musical accompaniment. “City of Angels” pays homage to the noir films of old Hollywood and features and incredible jazz score, including such songs as, “You Can Always Count on Me” and “I’m Nothing Without You.”
Set in the late 1940’s, City of Angels isn’t your typical musical; in fact, it’s a musical within a musical. With a story-within-a-story structure, this double-feature weaves together two different plot lines. First, the audience is introduced to Stone, a detective working in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, then it’s revealed that Stone is a character in a screen play, which a writer named Stine is adapting for film. With both writer and character influencing each other’s thoughts and actions, “City of Angels” comes alive with action, romance, mystery, and a brilliant jazz score.
The “City of Angels” cast is comprised completely of young actors from the Piedmont area between the ages of 13-19. “City of Angels” creative team is led by Robert Clater as director and Lesia Kaye as choreographer. Carolina Broadway Theatre Company (CBTC) produces professional style theatrical shows to educate and inspire young theatrical artists while entertaining patrons and enriching the cultural community at large. CBTC provides a transition into the professional world for aspiring local talent ages 6 to 21 by providing an opportunity to gain professional experience through working with established actors, directors, choreographers and/or composers from beyond the greater Western Carolina Region.
