Banner Elk, NC – Art on the Green, a popular art show held three times each year, kicks off its 2018 season this Saturday and Sunday (May 26-27) on the grounds of the Historic Banner Elk School.

The show converts the green space in front of the school into an art gallery filled with works from local and regional artists. The Memorial Day weekend show is the first of three seasonal shows. The second show takes place July 7-8 and the third show is set for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1-2.

The Memorial Day show features approximately 40 artists representing a variety of media, such as metal, glass, ceramics, wood, watercolor, acrylics and oil.

“The focus is on embracing our Appalachian heritage and really highlighting things in the hand-crafted Appalachian tradition,” says Kimberly Tufts, show director.

Proceeds from artists’ booth rental fees go to renovation efforts at the Historic Banner Elk School. The 1939 school was built as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression. The Town of Banner Elk owns the school, which is home to the Banner Elk Artists Gallery, Banner Elk Book Exchange and professional theater company Ensemble Stage.

Art on the Greene has no admission fee. Hours are 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Food vendors will be on hand, complementing the offerings at nearby restaurants.
