Hickory – ACAP-Hickory (Adult Children of Aging Parents) presents Partnering with Medical Professionals for Mom’s and Dad’s Best Care on Tuesday, August 8, 5:30-7:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Hickory (2780 N. Center Street, Hickory). Speaker for the program is Julie Packer, RN, MSN, Director of Professional Relations, Catawba Regional Hospice.
As parents age, medical issues often arise. Adult-children frequently become the ones who schedule appointments for their parents, accompany them to medical visits, help explain medicines and interpret treatments to loved ones, and help explain their parents’ symptoms to medical staff, serving as their caregivers and advocates for their parents. Particularly for family members who have no (or limited) medical training, ensuring Mom and Dad receive the medical care they need can be overwhelming.
Julie Packer, RN/MSN, an experienced liaison with medical staffs, will share understandings from her years as a registered nurse, knowledge gleaned from her professional relationships with physicians and other medical personnel, and insight from her experience as an adult-child caregiver for her aging parents. During the program, attendees will learn how to appropriately prepare for a medical visit; strategies for maximizing time with a medical team; approaches for strengthening parents’ medical care; and other guidelines regarding medical-issue conversations.
