Winston Duke and Zazie Beetz in Nine Days

Nine Days (2021) (**) Five unborn souls are interviewed in order to determine which gets to experience life in this first time film from Edson Oda. The well-intentioned fantasy drama will appeal to those who can get in synch with its unhurried pace. Others beware.

New to Streaming:

Val (2021) (***) Actor Val Kilmer bares all in this documentary culled from his personal archive of thousands of hours of home movies. Runs out of gas before it reaches the finish line but overall compelling.

Masquerade (2021) Bella Thorne stars in this home invasion thriller directed by Shane Dax Taylor.

Hail to the Deadites (2021) is an interesting new documentary about the legions of fans of The Evil Dead films.

New to Disc:

Film Movement:

You Will Die at Twenty (2021) The first ever Oscar submission from Sudan is the tale of a man haunted by the prophecy of the film’s title. The disc includes two bonus short films.

Severin Films:

Skinned Deep (2004) Warwick Davis and Jason Dugre star in this tale of a killing spree perpetrated by a gang of rural psychopaths from filmmaker Gabe Bartalos. Extras include commentary, featurette and the film’s trailer.

Born For Hell (1976) is Montreal director Denis Hacroux’s take on the story of Chicago serial killer, Richard Speck, as he transports the story to Belfast. Extras include documentaries, interviews and the US video release cut.

Arrow:

Vengeance Trails: Four Classic Westerns (1966-70) is a new collection spotlighting several forgotten Italian westerns. Films included are Massacre Time, My Name is Pecos, Bandidos, and And God Said to Cain. Extras include commentaries, documentaries, new interviews, trailers, poster and booklet.

Warner:

Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021) Angelina Jolie is a traumatized firefighter attempting to save a 12 year old while pursued by killers during a massive blaze. Extras include a featurette.

Criterion:

After Life (1998) The recently deceased must find one cherished moment to hold onto in this Japanese fantasy from Hirokazu Kore-eda. Extras include new commentary and interviews, deleted scenes and a trailer.

Dark Sky Films:

My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To (2021) Patrick Fugit is a young man in an emotional quandary as to what he should do about his younger brother’s mystery illness in this drama from Jonathan Cuartas.

Kino:

Back Street (1961) Susan Hayward and John Gavin are caught in a love affair that can never come to fruition due to life circumstances in this glossy adaptation of the Fanny Hurst novel. Extras include commentary and the film’s trailer.

Paramount:

The company has added two new titles to its Paramount Presents line of titles. These are A Place in the Sun (1951) and Nashville (1975). Both include new transfers along with archival and new special features.
