Hickory – Each year the month of June is celebrated nationwide by animal shelters and rescues, like the Humane Society of Catawba County, as Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. It comes at the peak of Kitten Season, where shelters see a dramatic increase in the numbers of cats and kittens. Here’s how you can help:

Adopt! – This one is a given. With so many cats in our care it is more important than ever to locate homes for the kitties that come into the shelters. With each adoption from HSCC two lives are saved, the cat you adopt and the one who takes its place. To encourage you to adopt a shelter cat this month we are offering #caturday adoption specials every Saturday in June at both shelters, where cat adoption fees will be lowered to $15, and kitten adoption fees will be lowered to $50. We typically do not offer adoption discounts on kittens, so this is a great time to add a furry family member if you have been on the fence. Keep in mind that many of our kittens are waiting for their spay/neuter surgery, but can be pre-adopted. To view a listing of current cats and kittens available for adoption you can visit our website: www.catawbahumane.org. Our goal for the month of June is to find homes for 60 kitties from our shelters, and with your help we can!

Foster – Become a foster family to a litter of kittens from HSCC. Between our two shelters we have close to 500 cats, many of which would benefit from time spent outside the shelter in a loving home. At HSCC we provide everything you need to care for your fosters: food, supplies, and complete medical care. All we ask is that you supply the love. By becoming a kitten foster you allow our shelter to be able to care for even more cats, by giving them a temporary home while they wait to reach the age that they can be spayed/neutered (12 weeks). Fosters help to socialize our kitties and teach them how to trust. The love you supply to foster cats and kittens will help to get them adopted more easily. It’s a total feel good experience. To get started you can email [email protected], stop by either shelter in person, or call Hickory: (828) 464-8878 or Newton: (828) 464-8878 for more information.

Spread the Word – Perhaps the most important thing you can do to help our kitties is to spread the word. Share our facebook posts on your timeline, encourage your friends and family to adopt a cat from HSCC, tell others about the needs we have for foster families, follow us on Instagram. You are the key to helping us bring about social change. Together we can make the world a nicer place for the homeless kitties in our community!
