Hickory – The Catawba Valley Community College’s Continuing Education Department is pleased to host artist Dan Smith, who will be giving an 8 week workshop on Tuesdays, January 29 thru March 19, 2019, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The workshop, “FaceScapes: Pushing the Limits of Portraiture,” will include in-door and out-door study. It will integrate art history with art-making styles and philosophies comparing and contrasting the classic approach to drawing with the expression and creative ideas in art.   Capturing a likeness will also be combined with intense experimentation in an attempt to reveal an internal spirit.  From an objective to a subjective approach to portrait making, participants will be challenged to think and act in new ways utilizing integrative techniques and attitudes during their art making process.

Throughout the workshop intimacies of personality and mood will be investigated and revealed resulting in the expression of the sitter’s essence.  The vocabulary of art laid over the composition of the face will involve a traditional combination of line, value, proportion, color, shape, volume, texture, variety and scale.  These formal approaches will merge with contemporary issues and strategies resulting in a psychologically charged image of a unique individual.

Dan Smith earned his BFA and MFA degrees in Painting and Drawing from East Carolina University and the University of South Carolina respectively.  During the past 30 years Smith has provided workshops throughout the US as well as teaching college level studio courses in painting, drawing, design, photography, humanities, art history and art appreciation in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, including Virginia Commonwealth University, Hampton University, The University of Richmond, Appalachian State University, Claflin University and Caldwell and Catawba County Community Colleges.

“FaceScapes: Pushing the Limits of Portraiture” is designed for all levels of expertise and those interested in expanding their drawing and painting techniques. It will encompass art history as well as portrait making.
