Thai University Apologizes For Hitler Banner
Bangkok (AP) Thailand’s premier university has apologized for displaying a billboard that showed Adolf Hitler alongside Superman and other superheroes, saying Monday it was painted by ignorant students who didn’t realize Hitler’s image would offend anyone.
The huge billboard was placed outside the art faculty of Chulalongkorn University as part of a tribute to this year’s graduating class.
It said “Congratulations” in bold white letters and showed Hitler with his arm raised in a Nazi salute next to Batman, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man.
“(We) would like to formally express our sincere apology for our students’ ‘Superhero’ mural,” art school dean Suppakorn Disatapundhu said in a statement issued Monday. “I can assure you we are taking this matter very seriously.”
The billboard was up for two days before being removed Saturday in response to criticism. Online photographs showed graduating students in their robes, mimicking Hitler’s raised arm salute.
The artistic vision behind the picture was to show that good and bad people co-exist in the world, Suppakorn said after summoning the students for an explanation. “They told me the concept was to paint a picture of superheroes who protect the world,” the dean said in a telephone interview. “Hitler was supposed to serve as a conceptual paradox to the superheroes,” he said, noting that the superheroes were painted in vivid colors, while Hitler’s image was in grey scale. “This kind of thoughtless display will not happen again.”
The study of history in the Thai school system revolves primarily around the history of Thailand and its long line of kings. World history is glossed over, with little or no mention of the Holocaust.

San Antonio (AP) A pooch has helped police catch a South Texas burglary suspect after the man took the dog along and the animal growled at officers seeking the pair.
San Antonio police arrested the man after a Mexican restaurant break-in and theft early Monday. His dog has been turned over to animal control officials.

Man In Drag Makes Off With Cash In Bag
Johnstown, PA (AP) Police say a western Pennsylvania bank robber was long and tall, but probably not named Sally despite outward appearances.
Instead police in Richland Township, near Johnstown, believe the robber was a 6-foot, 6-inch man who was wearing a wig and women’s clothes when he handed a teller a note demanding money at the First National Bank branch about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police say the suspect was wearing a straight-haired red wig, black dress and shoes, and was carrying a handbag.
Police Chief Michael Burgan says the bank still has to run an audit to determine how much money is missing. Police wouldn’t say if the man had a weapon, but say nobody was hurt as the teller complied with the robber’s demand.
Ad For Women Seeking ‘Sugar Daddies’ A New, Legal, Low
Pittsburgh (AP) A Toronto company that runs a website meant to connect female college students with ``sugar daddies’’ who pay a fee to join its service has posted a billboard in Pittsburgh.
The billboard by ArrangementFinders.com features porn star Bree Olson next to the caption, ``Need a Summer Job? Date a SUGAR DADDY.’’
Women can post free notices on the website to meet men who pay $49 to $79 monthly in hopes of developing ``mutually beneficially relationships,’’ A.J. Perkins, the company’s chief marketing officer, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The company’s ads have drawn ire, most notably in Chicago where a similar billboard made a reference to oral sex. The site’s slogan is ``Intimacy with a Twist,’’ with a dollar sign replacing the ``s.’’
``We wanted to make is humorous,’’ Perkins said of the Chicago billboard.
State police Cpl. Raymond Schafer, who works for a western Pennsylvania vice squad, confirmed the ads are legal because, as Perkins contends, they don’t include a direct offer of money for sex.
``You can pay for companionship,’’ Schafer said. ``Until money exchanges for a sexual favor, that’s when it becomes illegal.’’
Some people don’t think it’s funny or appropriate either way.
Amy Parker, executive director of Strong Women, Strong Girls Pittsburgh a mentoring program on five university campuses in the city said the billboard conveys a ``terrible message.’’
Perkins said Pittsburgh was targeted because of the potential for college-aged women to respond to the website, which has about 8,000 members within 25 miles of the city. The site has 2.1 million members nationwide. The company will monitor whether the billboard increases its local membership after about 30 days.
Tulsa Man Arrested After Woman Spots Him In Toilet

Kids Go Picking Cherries, But Find Ms. Mari Juana Instead
Paw Paw, MI (AP) Some children out picking cherries with their father in southwestern Michigan ended up finding about 50 marijuana plants in a farmer’s field along the way.
Lt. Robert Kirk of the Van Buren County sheriff’s department tells MLive.com that the family called shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday to report the discovery. Kirk says it appears that someone pulled out a row of corn and planted the marijuana, knowing that the farmer’s field would be fertilized and watered. In cases like this, Kirk says whoever planted the marijuana would usually come back before the corn was harvested.
Sheriff’s deputies pulled up the marijuana plants and they will be destroyed. Authorities say it’s common for marijuana growers to try to hide plants farmers’ fields this way.
