Man Grew Pot Because He Thought It’d Be Legal Soon

St. Albans, VT (AP) Vermont police have arrested a man who acknowledged growing marijuana to prepare for possible statewide legalization of the drug.

St. Albans police say they came across Michael Marshall while investigating a hunting violation. Marshall fled into a house after a confrontation with police, and then consented to a search of the residence. Police say they then found and seized 13 full-grown marijuana plants and 27 smaller plants.

Police say Marshall told them he thought marijuana would be legalized soon, so he wanted to get an early start on growing it for future sale.

The possession of small amounts of marijuana has been decriminalized in the state of Vermont, but it is still illegal for recreational use.

Police issued Marshall a citation to appear in court next month.

NY Bowler Bowls Perfect Game In 90 Seconds

Cortland, NY (AP) A New York bowler has rolled a perfect 300 game in less than 90 seconds.

Ben Ketola hit 12 straight strikes in 86.9 seconds on April 5 at 281 Bowl in Cortland.

The 23-year-old Preble man raced from one lane to the next at the 10-lane facility and registered the strikes using a different ball on each lane. He used Lanes 1 and 2 twice.

Ketola is a 225-average, two-handed bowler who works at the bowling alley. He tells The Post-Standard of Syracuse he “honestly wasn’t expecting to do it.”

There is no official speed record listed by the United States Bowling Congress. Pro bowler Tom Dougherty threw a perfect game over 12 lanes in 111 seconds in 2015.

Police Stop 12 Year Old Boy From Driving Across Australia

Sydney (AP) Outback police have arrested a 12-year-old boy who was almost a third of his way toward driving solo across Australia.

The unlicensed boy had driven more than 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) from his home in Kendall on the east coast when he was stopped by traffic police on Saturday on the Barrier Highway near the remote mining town of Broken Hill.

He was pulled over because a bumper bar was dragging on the road, a police statement said Sunday. Police said he was driving to the west coast city of Perth, more than 4,100 kilometers (2,500 miles) from Kendall.

Police have released no details on why the boy wanted to drive the Perth, whether he would be charged or whether he had refueled during his journey.

Vienna Bartender Appeals Fine For Public Belching And Wins

Vienna (AP) He who burps loudest laughs best - at least in this case.

Nearly a year after a policeman ticketed Edin Mehic for loudly belching next to him, the Vienna bartender has won his appeal.

Mehic was fined 70 euros ($75) for a sonorous post-kebab burp next to the officer at an amusement park. The ticket said he violated “public decency with a loud belch next to a police officer.”

But a court document Mehic emailed to The Associated Press on Friday shows authorities have ruled in his favor. It says there was “never proof” that he burped to affront the officer.

Mehic’s belch resonated in Austria long after it was emitted. Groups organized to support him, and a kebab chain paid for both his ticket and an all-expenses trip to Istanbul.

Toy Given To Police Officer As Safety Talisman Gets To Ohio

Cincinnati (AP) Police in Ohio have received a stuffed toy given by a child to a Pennsylvania police officer to help keep him safe.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports a stuffed moose called Mr. Moosey has become a traveling protection talisman sent to police and other first responder agencies around the country.

The toy was first given to Towamencin, Pennsylvania, police officer James Gibbas by 5-year-old Mackenzie Brown last year during a traffic stop. The child said she wanted the officer to have it to help keep him safe.

Gibbas kept it for a while before deciding it should be shared with other law enforcement agencies and fire departments around the country.

The toy has made its way to states including Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Doritos Provides Helicopters For Prom After Cheesy Request

Newton, KS (AP) Four Kansas teenagers arrived at prom in Doritos helicopters thanks to the cheesy way Shaedon Wedel asked his date to the dance.

The Kansas City Star reports Wedel asked his friend Carson Wittman’s 15-year-old sister, Carlie, to the prom in Newton because she dreamed of being Cinderella. Carlie Wittman has down syndrome.

Wedel asked Wittman to the dance with a customized Doritos t-shirt, and tweets about it caught the company’s attention.

So Doritos provided two red helicopters for Saturday’s dance, and a Wisconsin couple sent Carlie Wittman a princess style gown.

Carson Wittman and his date also got to fly to the dance.

Who Stashed Gold Inside A British Piano? It’s Still A Mystery

London (AP) British officials say they’ve been unable to trace the rightful heirs to a trove of gold coins found stashed inside a piano and worth a ``life-changing’’ amount of money.

The school that owns the piano and the tuner who found the gold are now in line for a windfall after a coroner investigating the find declared it treasure. But a couple who owned the piano for three decades before donating it to their local school will likely miss out.

The hoard was discovered last year when the piano was sent for tuning in Shropshire, central England. Under the keyboard neatly stacked in hand-stitched packages and pouches were 913 gold sovereigns and half-sovereigns minted in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Piano tuner Martin Backhouse said when he found the pouches and slit open the stitching, he thought: ``Ooh, it looks like there’s rather a lot of gold in this.’’

The hoard, which weighs 6 kilograms (13 pounds), has not been formally valued. But Peter Reavill of the British Museum has said the trove is worth a ``potentially life-changing’’ amount.

Revenue from items declared ``treasure’’ is generally split between the owner in this case, the Bishops Castle Community College and the finder.

The piano was owned for 33 years by Graham and Meg Hemmings, who donated it last year to the school near their home. But Meg Hemmings said she’s not bitter at missing out on treasure that was right under her nose.
