Hickory – Join us this fall at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library as we learn about mental health issues in older adults. The Vaya Health’s Geriatric and Adult Mental Health Team is offering free training opportunities with contact hours provided through the N.C. Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR). They will provide five educational sessions from August through December.

All trainings will be held at the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library in Hickory, NC from 10am to 12pm.

The topics are: August 20, Neurocognitive Disorders: Dementia Overview; September 24, Mental Health 101; October 15, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder; November 19, Substance Use in Older Adults; December 17, Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders.

The first session is “Neurocognitive Disorders: Dementia Overview.” Commonly referred to as dementia, neurocognitive disorders can affect the way people perceive and engage with the world around them. This course, created from evidence-informed materials, looks at various classifications of neurocognitive disorders (NCDs), delirium and common changes associated with each type. Tips for caregivers are provided.

These free trainings are open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. You can also register by calling 828-304-0500 ext. 7235, or register online at http://hickorync.gov/content/library, click on Library Events, and choose the first session, “Neurocognitive Disorders: Dementia Overview.” Contact hours are available on the day of the program.
