Reason For The Season!

December 12, 2013

Children’s faces light up when they see Santa Claus
Waiting to whisper their wishes in his ear at the mall
White lights twinkle, bells jingle, elves dance to and fro
Susie wants a toy oven; Billy wants sea monkeys to grow

Plastic Santas sing out about red nosed reindeer
As blown up snowmen wave a mechanical good cheer
While fake snow twirls inside their bellies in a flurry
Making a winter wonderland scene as shoppers scurry

Sales and discounts abounded everywhere you look
Fifty percent off! Buy one get one free! Keep shoppers hooked
Red tags, blue dots, slashed prices and flashing lights
What a fury! What a frenzy! It’s almost a fright!

Video games, talking toys, and blue suede shoes
Striped socks, wool sweaters, and jingle bell ties, too
Stocking stuffers, bangle bracelets and hats trimmed in fur
So many choices! What to get him? What to get her?

What gifts shall we give, how much should we spend?
Hasty decisions are made as stress levels rise again
With list in hand, folks scuttle from store to store
Hours turn to days as they try not to make gifting a chore

Exhausted and frantic, sometimes tempers flare
Pushing and shoving each other without nary a care
While carolers sing merry songs to all passersby
Songs of frosty snowmen and mountains on high

Department store windows don tinsel and bells
The sights! The sounds! And oh my, the smells!
Cold noses press against a store’s huge window pane
To catch the first glimpse of the newest toy train

Even bakeries bustle to make holiday feasts
Kneading and baking all flavors of holiday treats
Cookies are drizzled with caramel and chocolate fudge
To delight even the most discriminating taste buds

When the shopping is done and stores close for the night
Weary shopkeepers tally the day’s sales to their delight
Shelves are empty, the carolers have stopped singing
An eerie silence has fallen, registers no longer ringing

Christmas Eve finds children still dreaming of more
More toys! More games! And gadgets galore!
Parents wrap gifts and build child-size bikes
All of this until the wee hours of the night

Yet, if we sit still and reflect on the real reason
For this most marvelous and joyful season
We’ll remember how angels sang of events long ago
The story of a birth in a manger, it was told

A simple carpenter this child became
And yet this world has forever been changed
He spoke of love, He spoke of forgiveness
He taught us the meaning of loving-kindness

Christmas has gotten too commercial these days
It’s not about lights, or snowmen, or sleighs
Christmas is an extraordinary time of year
When everyone is filled with love and cheer

A special kind of magic happens when cold hearts melt
Whenever smiles warmly greet each other…love is felt
Between friends! Amongst strangers! Everyone! Everywhere!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if humble Christmas Love lasted all year?

The meaning of Christmas simply can’t be bought
Let’s never forget what we were taught
We can’t purchase more kindness and sharing
There aren’t sales on thoughtfulness and caring

Christmas is a gift to all of us, with love
From the great I AM above
Let us all cherish the true reason
For this most holy season
