A Very Kiddy Christmas

December 21, 2017

T’was the night before
Christmas, and all through
the barn,
Not a tiny kid was stirring,
no cause for alarm.
Six feed sacks were hung on
the rafters with care,
In hopes that great Billy Goat would soon be there.

Snuggled deep in the straw, kids slept peacefully,
While visions of alfalfa flowers danced in their heads.
And me in my fleeced PJ’s with cool emoji stuff,
Had just finished hot chocolate with marshmallow fluff.

When deep in the corn field, came a clash of thunder,
Sitting straight up in bed,
shaken, I started to shudder.
Sprinting hastily from
under covers,
I tripped over “Mutt” as
I dashed,
Stumbling in total darkness, into the window I crashed.

Quickly gathering my wits, through the pane I glanced,
Bathed in moonlight, eerie shadows strangely danced.
When suddenly my bewildered eyes caught sight,
Of a stagecoach! Holy cow, it appeared to be in flight!

Pulled by six Clydesdales, so majestic their stride,
I just knew the great Billy Goat had finally arrived.
As light as a feather, they flew on massive hooves,
Escorted by Shetland ponies, donkeys and white doves.

Now, Saddles! Now, Shiloh! Now, Fancy and Quicken!
On, Dallas! On, Dylan! On Maverick and Texan!
To the edge of the corn field, behind the barn wall,
Go with greens! Go with grains! Go with hay for all!

Above the corn stalks, the coach sailed through the air,
As light as a feather, on a wing and a prayer.
They flew to the barn, all landing with grace,
That’s when I caught sight of Billy’s sly grin on his face.

Hoofs pranced the ground, mighty, the majestic steeds,
Yet, my mind came alive, “Don’t wake the kids, please!”
As I crept closer still, making nary a sound,
That spry Billy Goat left the stage with a bound!

He was dressed all in red, except for shiny black boots,
Only on his hind hooves I
noticed…too cute!
A bundle of snacks he flung across his strong back,
Soon to be munchies for the ornery ‘six-pack.’

His eyes were black as coal, his whiskers were plenty,
Hanging down to his knees…smooth, silky and trendy.
His nostrils, they flared, vapor expelled as he snorted,
Making a halo above him, although slightly distorted.

His horns were majestic, curved graceful and strong,
Giving hint to his age, which was surely quite long.
Perched in between his hat
was held in place,
As the pom-pom rested aside of his face.

Old and wise he seemed, yet, somehow so merry!
His cheeks were rosy, like the sheath of a berry!
Glinting in the dark, his eyes hinted of mischief,
Giving me pause, then I
realized…it’s Christmas!

He was quite fit as a fiddle,
yet light on his feet,
Exactly how this mountain goat accomplishes his deeds.
The twinkle in his eye, told me all I needed to know,
He was here to spread cheer, with much love to bestow.

A swish of his tail, and he
trotted through the large door,
To fill stockings with treats for all the kids, then add a
tad more.
Working ever so quickly, not
a sound as he went,
Filling each sack to the brim, such a gallant gent.

Finished, he returned, giving the mighty horses a signal,
Up and away they all flew, as their sleigh bells jingled.
But I heard his exclaim, as they dashed out of sight,
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all goats a good-night!”
